The official sheet music edition of the 2025 ISJAC Rule Beasley Prize–winning composition

The Way It Is! is an original composition by Matteo Prefumo, winner of the 2025 ISJAC Rule Beasley Prize in Jazz Leadsheet Composition, presented by the International Society of Jazz Arrangers & Composers.

The piece was also performed live during an Italian tour featuring Joe Locke, Jim Ridl, Lorin Cohen and Vladimir Kostadinovic.

Built around a strong melodic identity, The Way It Is! combines rich contemporary harmony, shifting meters, rhythmic detail and open sections for improvisation — making the score useful not only for performance, but also for studying the compositional and harmonic ideas behind the music.
